Free at last

Finally, Friday. And Friday afternoon at that.

We've had a spell of beautiful weather, days in seventies, nights in fifties, no humidity to speak of; of course, we're losing it just in time for the weekend.

The Democratic convention was little short of amazing. I don't think I've ever watched a convention of either party's that had such of string of wonderful speeches. I have no idea how the Repubs can top that. And that VP of McCain? Surely she has to make up the mind of the undecideds - she's scary. Anti-choice, pro-drilling, anti-environment; Bush on steroids. We can not have her one shaky, McCain heartbeat away from the Presidency.

I've been on an interesting roll of reading first novels lately. Amazingly, the best book has been No Castles Here by A.C.E. Bauer, a YA book. The author gets inside the head of her hero, and wonderfully shows how a book can get inside you and help you grow. Much recommend for kids and adults.

Kate Christensen's first book, In the Drink, was a bit of a let down. She's got the character voice down, it's just the character isn't very interesting. I'm glad I didn't read this first, I might not have tried the rest and the rest are very good.

Alice in Bed, Cathleen Schine's first novel, shows her promise as well, but it took lacks the depth that would come.

Yeah, the DNC was amazing. I got teary several times. I think it's the process of actually having hope again.

When I first saw headlines saying "McCain Picks Palin", I was confused by the fact that I should recognize this person just by their last name. In fact, though it made no sense, I thought, McCain picked Michael Palin? because that was the only person that came to mind.

But once I realized who they were talking about, I was as alarmed as you. jaylake linked to an interesting viewpoint by one of Palin's constiuents here.

I agree that the most insulting thing is that McCain expected women to vote for her just because she's a woman.

Really of all the Republican women he had to choose from, I can't think of one more insulting.

And that was a very interesting piece. If this is as clean as a Republican can get in Alaska, you shudder to think how bad the rest must be.
